Light to full shade; Rich woodland soil; Lovely ferny foliage 1-2' tall. This plant occurs in woodlands and floodplains with moist, organic but well drained soils. Small white flowers appear atop a short stalk in May-June. these are followed by white berries with a conspicuous black dot (pupil) making them look like a cluster of small dolls eyes. These berries are extremely poisonous and care should be used if planted in places where small children frequent. Zone 3-8; WV, VA ecotypes.
