Sun; Average to dry soil; The primary plant of tallgrass prairies this grass is also common in fields and riverside meadows throughout the east. Foliage is variable from blue-green to green-red in the summer but turning yellow to orange to scarlet in the fall. Bold and attractive as a garden accent or in a mass planting. Grows between 4 and 6 feet tall. Flowers appear in midsummer and can be subtly attractive. Zone 2-8; WV, VA ecotypes.
