Arisaema triphyllum (Jack-in-the-pulpit)

The familiar Jack-in-the-pulpit, so named because of its flower structure, is both a beautiful spring flower to include in the garden as well as a good foliage accent for later in the summer (especially when paired with ferns or sedges). The plant if variable in color (brownish or greenish) and height (from 1-2’ tall). it is also dioecious with separate male and female plants whose sexes may change from year to year. Flowers are followed (female only) by bright red berries that are favored by box turtles and wood thrushes. The plant prefers partial to full shade and rich, moist soil. Zone 4-9. VA ecotype.
