Full sun; average to poor; heavy but well-drained soil, including shaley and sandy soils; definitely not a weed, rather a beautiful plant with bright yellow/orange/red flowerheads which attract hoards of butterflies; sometimes difficult to establish; site in a sunny spot in lean soil with good drainage; height 1’-3’ tall; blooms July-Sept. zones 4-9.  WV. ecotypes.
