Sun to Shade; Dry sandy acidic soil; Similar to the dwarf crested iris, this one though forms clumps rather than creeps and does not have above ground roots. Iris verna likes dry acidic woodlands and is usually found in the company of pine trees and sandy sandy soil. Var. smalliana occurs in the mountains and piedmont throughout its range while var. verna has a more coastal distribution. Blue-violet flowers in April-May; Grows 6-10" tall; Zone 6-8; WV, VA ecotypes
