Eastern Blazingstar is one of a group of closely related species (Liatris scariosa var. novae-angliae, Var. nieuwlandii, and Liatris squarrulosa) How it differs from these other species botanically is a small needle to thread. however they do occupy quite different regions and soil types. This one (var. scariosa) is found on moderately calcareous shales and sandstones in barren sunny to lightly shaded locations. It ranges from Pennsylvania, through the mid-atlantic south to northern Georgia and Alabama. It has large button-like flowers that appear from August to September. flowers are typically pink-purple but sometimes white. Plants grow about 2-3 feet tall. Zone 3-8; WV. ecotype.
