Pedicularis canadensis (Lousewort)

Deciduous shade to part shade; well drained soils; interesting, feathery-looking foliage is fern-like in appearance, the yellow-pink-maroon flowers spin out it whorls at the end of a long stalk.  Each flower is surrounded by many green bracts giving the inflorescence an interesting multi-colored pattern.  This plant is thought to be a bit of a predator in that it feeds off the roots of selected other plants; Grows 4-6" tall; blooms April-June;  zones 4-8; WV. ecotype.
