Part to full shade; Rich moist soil often in floodplains and damp woodlands; Leatherwood is an interesting small shrub that wants to be a tree. Often single-trunked and non-suckering. The twigs and branches are very flexible and can be tied in knots without damage; Yellow-green flowers appear early in spring (March-April) followed by orange fruits in the summer that are loved by birds. Grows 5-7' tall; Zone 3-9; WV ecotype.
