Baptisia lactea (Prairie, White False Indigo)

Baptisia lactea (Prairie, White False Indigo)

$8.00

The white false indigos are a botanically confused bunch. This species found mainly in midwestern prairies was and is variously listed as Baptisia alba, Baptisia alba var. macrophylla, Baptisia lactea and Baptisia leucantha. We are going with “lactea” as the best current way to differentiate this species from the similar southeastern one currently going by just Baptisia alba. Whew! This one grows in the prairies as far east as Ohio. It is a large bushy perennial emerging in the spring like dark grey asparagus ultimately leafing out with blue-grey leaves and topped with spikes of white lupine-like flowers in May-June. Grows 3-5' tall and has a deep taproot so plants are not easily moved once established. Zone 3-9. OH ecotype.
